Let’s Talk Liberal Democrat - Why Should You Think Twice
One good performance in a debate and a bit of media hype and we have the new saviour of Britain, or so it may seem.
But, is that the case? Well it certainly suggests that the Lib Dems’ policies are worth scrutinising a bit deeper. If you are considering voting Lib Dem based on *that* performance, think about these things:
-
Do you want to be carried deeper into the European project? When Nick Clegg was an MEP he proved his love of the European Union. The Liberal Democrats would happily and enthusiastically adopt the Euro and cheerfully get rid of the Pound.
-
So what’s the alternative? Well, David Cameron is the first main party leader in Britain to go into an election with an ambition to repatriate power back from Brussels. The Conservatives are the only major party committed to keeping the pound.
-
Do you believe that people who have entered Britain illegally should get an amnesty and be allowed to stay here? The Lib Dems do. They are soft on immigration, and think we should give 600,000 illegal immigrants permission to stay in the UK rather than try to send them back to their home countries.
-
So, what’s the alternative? Well it is only the Conservatives that want to put a limit on the number of migrants coming in to the UK.
-
Do you think that the NHS budget should be cut? Well, the Lib Dems have so far refused to promise to protect the NHS budget, leaving open the belief that they plan to make cuts.
-
So, what’s the alternative? The Conservatives have pledge to ring fence the NHS budget, and indeed to increase it in real terms year on year - whilst also making it more efficient.
-
Do you think that burglars and drug dealers should avoid jail terms? The Liberal Democrats want to stop anyone receiving less than a 6 month sentence from going to prison.
-
So, what’s the alternative? The Conservatives have pledged to redevelop the prisons estate, to increase capacity - but to also increase focus on rehabilitation so that prisoners are less likely to reoffend when they leave.
-
Do you want another five years of Labour’s Gordon Brown? The Lib Dems have refused to rule out keeping Labour in power even if the Conservatives get more votes in the General Election.
So, what’s the alternative? Only the Conservatives can bring about real change.
