Martin Curtis - Thoughts On Party Conference
Monday, 17 May 2010 09:55

The Party Conference was a conference that proved that our Party had come of age - but had also gone back to its roots. I say that because the recognition of the need to deal with poverty and deprivation shone throughout the conference, both on the main platform and on the fringe. What was most important was the reaction amongst the Party grass roots; the Conservative Party as a whole is signed up to tackling this problem.

Historically, the Conservative Party have always been compassionate, Disraeli's principle of One Nation is at the heart of our philosophy. But, our approach will be different. New Labour have failed because they have driven everything from the top down. They have told local authorities how to do things, and thrown a whole mass of bureaucracy along with it. This approach has cost us dear - it is why we are swimming in debt as a Nation, but it has also failed to deliver. In smatterings, there are things that have worked, but not offering anything like the value that taxpayers deserve.

So an approach that minimises National control and empowers local Councils and communities will be more cost effective, but it will also make sure that solutions for Nottingham North are ones that are right for Nottingham North rather than for Gordon Brown's soundbites.

Nottingham North has a great deal to gain from the change of Government that will come whenever the General Election is called, as I have said before, the election can't come soon enough.
